A Fresh Start

Fresh

Doesn’t that word just feel good? Fresh air, a fresh coffee, the smell of freshly cut grass. We have started a new year, and I think we can all agree we are looking forward to a fresh start. A new year brings optimism, focus, and goals.

Sustainable and stylish

One of our goals is to incorporate more green solutions in and around our home. Small, yet impactful changes are easy. Replacing plastic wrap with patterned beeswax wrap, grocery shopping with reusable cloth produce bags, and refilling apothecary jars with eco-friendly soap and laundry detergent not only look good but are easy on our environment. The Kind Matter Co. on Kerr Street is a great resource for no-waste and low-waste products.

A bright idea

Another way to make a change is switching incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs. The idea is simple, but shopping for them can be overwhelming with all of the different brands and options. My best advice is to look at the Kelvin Scale, 2700K for light bulbs in chandeliers and lamps, 3000K in potlights. If your lights are on a dimmer, make sure the package says ‘dimmable’ or you will have a strobe effect which might work for a living room dance party, but not for every day.

Lighten up

A fresh coat of paint can transform a room, and your mood. Depending on the colour, it can create the illusion of more space, and create a sense of lightness and brightness. We have all seen the trendy ‘Colour of the Year’ but to be honest, I have never been much of a trend follower. I prefer to look at rooms more holistically and organically, and choose colours that are more classic in nature, colours that compliment your furniture and will last beyond a year.

A few of my favourites by Benjamin Moore

Cloud White CC-40, a creamier white, well suited to historic homes and cottages.

Simply White OC-117, a favourite of mine that is fresh and bright, without feeling cool.

Silver Satin OC-26, a classic warm silver that changes throughout the day, feeling soft in the morning, and cozy in the evening. Great in stairwells, and open concept spaces.

Whirlpool CC-910, a beautiful pale blue-grey that works with any neutral or bright colour. I love it in bedrooms and living rooms.

Georgian Bay CC-782, a classic colour for a front door, lighter than a navy but works well with limestone or red brick.

A happy home

I firmly believe that good design is about how you feel, what makes you happy, comfortable, and at ease. Earthy materials, touchable textures, cozy fabrics, and furniture you want to sink into are all at the top of the list. Our homes should reflect our lifestyles and our personalities. Perhaps you want to incorporate your grandmother's antique cabinet or silver? If it brings you joy, do it! Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love.
